New Delhi, July 30: The Supreme Court on Wednesday expressed serious concerns over the conduct of Justice Yashwant Varma, stating that his actions did not inspire confidence. The court also strongly defended the authority of the Chief Justice of India (CJI), asserting that the CJI cannot function merely as a “post office” but bears important responsibilities to the judiciary and the nation.
The bench was hearing a petition filed by Justice Varma, now serving in the Allahabad High Court, challenging the findings of an in-house inquiry committee that held him guilty of misconduct.
The case revolves around the alleged recovery of a substantial amount of burnt currency from Justice Varma’s official residence during his tenure as a judge of the Delhi High Court. The in-house panel had found him responsible for misconduct in the matter.
During the hearing, the apex court questioned why Justice Varma chose to approach the Supreme Court after the internal committee had already given its report, suggesting that due process had been followed.
