New Delhi, Sep 9: The Supreme Court instructed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to submit a fresh report by September 17 regarding their ongoing probe into the rape and murder of a postgraduate medical student at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, leading a bench that also included Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, reviewed the report filed under seal by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the CBI.

The bench noted that while a status report had been provided and the investigation is ongoing, they did not wish to interfere with the CBI's procedural decisions.

Solicitor General Mehta informed the court that the CBI plans to send forensic samples to AIIMS for further analysis. The court also directed that a senior officer from the West Bengal Home Department and a high-ranking CISF officer ensure that all three CISF companies stationed at RG Kar Hospital are properly accommodated and provided with all necessary security equipment.

At the beginning of the proceedings, the West Bengal government reported that the ongoing doctors' strike, sparked by the rape and murder case, has resulted in 23 fatalities.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing the state, submitted a report from the state health department detailing the situation.

Previously, on August 22, the Supreme Court criticized the Kolkata Police for their delayed response to the case, describing the delay as "extremely disturbing" and questioning the timing of their procedural actions.

The court had previously set up a 10-member National Task Force (NTF) to create protocols for safeguarding doctors and healthcare professionals.
