Experts urge holistic approach balancing ecology with economic viability

Vani Vihar witnessed a significant convergence of academic minds on January 19, 2026, as the P.G. Department of Geography at Utkal University joined forces with the Indian Society of Remote Sensing (ISRS), Bhubaneswar Chapter. Together, they organized a seminar centered on the critical theme of "Landscape Sustainability: A New Dimension of Environmental Philosophy."

The event brought together distinguished scholars to discuss how humanity interacts with the environment. Prof. Malay Mukhopadhaya from Viswa-Bharati, Santiniketan, delivered the special lecture, offering a fresh perspective on ecological management.

Redefining Environmental Philosophy

In his address, Prof. Mukhopadhaya argued that Landscape Sustainability is not merely about maintaining scenic beauty. Instead, he described landscapes as dynamic, integrated systems where human activity, ecological processes, and cultural values intersect. He emphasized the need for holistic, place-based solutions. According to the professor, true sustainability requires balancing ecological health—such as biodiversity and resilience—with human well-being and economic viability. He called for functional designs that adapt to cultural needs while ensuring a resilient future.

Moral Obligations and Policy

Dr. Debajit Mishra, President of the ISRS Bhubaneswar Chapter and former Senior Scientist at ORSAC, presided over the meeting. Dr. Mishra highlighted the importance of a comprehensive framework regarding environmental policies. He stressed that humanity has a moral obligation to pursue sustainable development, ensuring the well-being of both the present population and future generations.

Dr. Ashis Chandra Pathy, the Coordinator of the Department of Geography at Utkal University and Secretary of ISRS, organized the meeting. In his concluding remarks, Dr. Pathy further illuminated the core concepts of sustainability discussed throughout the session.

The seminar saw active participation from the academic community. Dr. Nihar Ranjan Das, Professor of Civil Engineering at SOA University, delivered the vote of thanks. Notable attendees included Dr. Rumana Khatun and Dr. Jyotirmayee Mohanta, along with Prof. Shibabrata Das from Ravenshaw University and Dr. Sanjay Mishra from S.C.S. Autonomous College, Puri.
