Subarnapur, August 1: As Sambalpuri Day is celebrated across Odisha on August 1, a uniquely crafted Sambalpuri Bandha saree has captured the attention of handloom lovers and artisans alike. Designed as a tribute to the rich weaving tradition of western Odisha and Guru Satyanarayan Bohidar, the pioneer of modern Sambalpuri Bandha, the saree has become the centre of attraction.

The exquisite creation has been woven by Himanchal Meher of Haradkhola village in Subarnapur district. It took nearly three months to complete, with every member of his family contributing to the painstaking weaving process.

What makes the saree stand out is its intricate woven inscriptions and artistic motifs celebrating Sambalpuri culture. Popular phrases such as "Khaema Sambalpuri, Gaema Sambalpuri", along with several traditional sayings and symbolic designs, have been woven directly into the fabric, showcasing the craftsmanship of Odisha's celebrated Bandha artisans.

The saree was conceptualised to commemorate Sambalpuri Day, observed every year on the birth anniversary of Guru Satyanarayan Bohidar, whose contributions played a pivotal role in giving Sambalpuri handloom its distinct identity and global recognition.

The special design was created by renowned Bandha artist Prafulla Meher, who said the project involved a dedicated team of artisans working together to bring the unique concept to life. He expressed confidence that the saree would be widely appreciated by Sambalpuri handloom enthusiasts and serve as a tribute to the region's cultural legacy.

With Sambalpuri textiles earning recognition across India and abroad, innovative creations such as this themed saree continue to highlight the creativity of Odisha's weavers while promoting the state's rich handloom heritage on the global stage.
