Interior districts will shiver while coastal areas will witness dense morning fog

Winter has tightened its grip across Odisha, with night temperatures plummeting significantly in the interior districts. According to the latest data released by the Meteorological Centre Bhubaneswar on January 18, 2026, intense cold wave conditions are prevailing in several parts of the state, disrupting normal life.

Phulbani Records Season's Lowest

Phulbani continues to be the coldest urban centre in the state. The forecast for January 19 indicates a sharp drop in minimum temperature to 6°C in Phulbani. Other western and interior towns are also experiencing severe chill. Rourkela and Jharsuguda are forecasted to record lows of 7°C, while Angul and Bolangir are hovering around 9°C. This trend of single-digit temperatures is expected to continue for the next 72 hours.

Detailed 5-Day Forecast

The IMD outlook suggests that the cold conditions will remain consistent throughout the week.

  • January 20: Rourkela and Phulbani will remain at 7°C, while Jharsuguda will see a marginal rise to 8°C.
  • January 21 to 23: The chill will persist with Phulbani stuck at 7°C and Rourkela at 8°C.
  • Southern Districts: Koraput and Nawarangpur are also feeling the bite of winter, with temperatures ranging between 10°C and 12°C throughout the week.

Twin City Weather Update

Residents of the Twin Cities—Cuttack and Bhubaneswar—are waking up to misty mornings. The forecast for the week predicts fog or mist in the morning hours followed by mainly clear skies later in the day.

  • Cuttack: The minimum temperature remains chilly at 11°C for the first two days, gradually rising to 13°C by January 23.
  • Bhubaneswar: The capital city mirrors this trend, starting the week at 11°C and seeing a slight increase to 13°C by the weekend. Maximum temperatures in the Twin Cities will hover between 27°C and 31°C, making the afternoons relatively pleasant.

Commuters in coastal districts, including Puri, Jagatsinghpur, and Kendrapara, have been advised to exercise caution during early morning hours due to reduced visibility caused by fog. While the days remain sunny, the sharp drop in mercury after sunset marks a distinct peak in this year's Odisha weather update.
