Bhubaneswar, Dec 30: The Kanjia lake will be restored with the development of its surroundings to conserve the water body’s ecosystem and prevent flooding in Nandankanan zoo and botanical garden during heavy rainfall. The Odisha government has laid out a budget of Rs 17 crore for it.
Forest and Environment Minister Pradeep Kumar Amat said addressing the 64th foundation day of Nandankanan Zoological Park (NZP) here on Friday.
An outlet will be constructed to drain out excess water from Kanjia lake to Budhi Nala under the lake revival project and talks are in progress in this regard with the Water Resources department.
The lake spread over 64 hectare of land does not have any outlet that often leads to flood-like situation during excess rainfall.
A series of activities were taken up by the state government as part of the zoo’s foundation day.
Notably, Nandankanan Zoological Park is going to get a major facelift with world-class amenities for visitors coming to the zoo.
The Central Zoo Authority has approved the detailed project report submitted by Nandankanan administration.
A world class zoo will be developed in 1043 hectares of land of the Nandankanan.
The administration has planned to create a water bird aviary, a modern frontage and landscaping, a tunnel aquarium, and an immersive enclosure.
