Baripada, Sept 27: A rogue elephant that had had created panic in Baripada after killing four persons over the past three days was successfully tranquilised on Thursday night around 2:30 am.
The Forest Department convened an emergency meeting after the elephant trampled a woman to death. Led by DFO Uma Mahesh, the team included various range officers, forest guards, and trained personnel, who were engaged in an intensive eight-hour-long operation to subdue the animal.
Following the tranquilisation, the elephant managed to escape into the forest. As a result, heavy rains hindered efforts to transport the animal, complicating the situation further. Later, the forest department managed to lift the elephant and was then taken to Kapilas for treatment.
Once the elephant recovers, it will be released back into its natural habitat in the forest, said DFO Uma Mahesh.
