Kolkata, Sept 2: Former RG Kar Medical College principal Dr Sandip Ghosh was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday over corruption.
Following the arrest, Ghosh was escorted to the CBI's Nizam Palace office in Kolkata in the evenign which houses the agency's anti-corruption wing.
The hospital's former deputy superintendent Dr Akhtar Ali had lodged complaints of financial irregularities on multiple counts at the establishment during Ghosh's tenure as principal.
Ghosh was asked to go on leave by the state government after the murder of the trainee doctor came to light.
Earlier, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) had suspended the membership of Ghosh who was the vice President of the IMA Kolkata Chapter, from the panel. The decision was unanimously taken by the disciplinary committee constituted by the National President Dr RV Asokan.
RG Kar medical college was highlighted in media after the brutal rape &murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor in a seminar hall on August 9.
After taking up the case from the Kolkata Police, CBI had begun lie detection tests on Ghosh and other 5 suspects as part of their probe into the rape-murder of the junior doctor.
Later, Ghosh was questioned for the last 15th day at the agency's Salt Lake office over the alleged rape and murder of the RG Kar hospital post-graduate trainee on August 9. Meanwhile, the CBI took Dr Ghosh to custody on the basis of financial irregularities.
