New Delhi, Feb 9: Both Houses of Parliament are set to begin discussions on the Union Budget for the financial year 2026-27 on Monday, following its presentation by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on February 1.
Sitharaman, who presented the Union Budget for the ninth consecutive time in the Lok Sabha, emphasized that the Budget is designed around the theme of "Yuvashakti" (youth power) and is driven by "three kartavyas" (duties). Key proposals in the budget include the development of seven high-speed rail corridors, the creation of new dedicated freight corridors, and the operationalization of 20 national waterways over the next five years, aimed at boosting infrastructure and economic growth.
The Budget also includes a significant measure aimed at curbing speculative trading, with the government announcing an increase in the Securities Transaction Tax (STT) on futures and options (F&O) contracts.
While the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has welcomed the Budget, the Opposition parties have raised concerns, particularly regarding the alleged exclusion of marginalized communities from the government’s proposed plans. The Secular Progressive Alliance, led by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in Tamil Nadu, has called for a protest against the Budget on February 12.
In addition to the general Budget discussion, Opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) are likely to raise issues related to the framework of the Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) between India and the United States. DMK MP TR Baalu has already submitted an Adjournment Motion notice in the Lok Sabha, calling for a discussion on the trade deal. Baalu's notice highlights concerns over zero tariffs on certain agricultural products imported into India from the US, which he believes could have adverse effects on local farmers.
Meanwhile, floor leaders of the INDIA bloc, an opposition alliance, are scheduled to meet ahead of today’s Parliament sitting at the residence of Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge. In the meeting, they will discuss their strategy for the ongoing Budget session and decide on their next steps.
Additionally, BJP MP Satish Chandra Dubey will lay before the Rajya Sabha a copy of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India’s (CAG) report on the operational performance of NLC India Limited, which falls under the Ministry of Coal.
As the Budget session progresses, all eyes will be on the debate and discussions that are set to unfold, with both the government and opposition preparing to outline their respective priorities and concerns. Further updates are expected as the session advances.
