Cuttack, Sept 13: At a time when the name change row of Odisha’s most premier institution Ravenshaw University, has been spreading dissonance across the state, Cuttack MP Bhartruhari Mahtab’s statement on the issue, created a fresh and vibrant resonance over it on Friday.
Responding to media persons relating the name change debate, Mahtab mentioned that the issue dates back to early eighties.
Mahtab said, the proposal for changing name of the Ravenshaw College had originated from the conception of Bruhattar (Bigger) Odisha when Mayurbhanj was annexed with the ancient Odisha province in 1949. Later, the Ravenshaw’s name change issue was presented in the Odisha Assembly during the tenure of Raghunath Mishra, the then Education Minister.
Based on it, Odisha had witnessed a number of protests by the students’ wings over changing the name of the College, comissioned from the British Era which was very often backed up by the political leaders, Mahtab added.
Clearifying his own stance relating to the Ravenshaw College’s name change row, Mahatab said, “I have scored a number of articles in favour of this notion in 1977 and 1980, wherein I have reflected my ideas and views on it with utmost audacity.”
Recently, the Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan who opined to think upon the name change proposal of the Ravenshaw University is nothing new. However, it’s the government to take right decision in time, the Cuttack MP added.
