Rath Yatra 2026: Pipili Artisan creates stunning miniature replicas of chariots using shirt buttons

Pipili, Jul 16: In a remarkable display of creativity and devotion, Akshay Kumar Mahapatra, a young Chandua artisan from Pipili, has crafted miniature replicas of Lord Jagannath's three iconic Rath Yatra chariots using around 5,200 shirt buttons.

The intricate artwork faithfully recreates the Nandighosha, Taladhwaja, and Darpadalana chariots, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship and attention to detail. Akshay spent more than a month completing the unique project.

This is not the first time the young artisan has drawn public admiration for his innovative creations. Last year, he made headlines after building miniature Rath Yatra chariots using raw rice grains, earning widespread appreciation for his artistic ingenuity.

For the past six years, Akshay has been creating replicas of Lord Jagannath's chariots every year using different unconventional materials, blending traditional devotion with artistic innovation.

Although he earns his livelihood as a Chandua artisan, Akshay says his dream extends beyond his profession. Through his artwork, he hopes to spread the glory of Lord Jagannath to every household while introducing Odisha's rich traditional crafts to the younger generation.

Behind his success stands his biggest source of inspiration and support—his mother. She has assisted him throughout every stage of the chariot-making process, playing a crucial role in turning his creative vision into reality.

Akshay's latest creation has once again highlighted the artistic excellence of Pipili, renowned worldwide for its traditional appliqué craftsmanship, while reflecting the enduring spirit of devotion associated with the Jagannath Rath Yatra.
