Puri, June 16: In a significant announcement ahead of the annual Rath Yatra in Puri, Odisha Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan stated that any non-servitor found climbing the sacred chariots of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, or Devi Subhadra will be arrested immediately.
The declaration came on Sunday following a crucial preparatory meeting with the Chhatisa Nijog, the apex body of temple servitors. Speaking to the media after the meeting, the Minister said, “Strict regulatory measures have been discussed and finalised. Climbing the chariots is strictly reserved for authorised servitors. Any violation of this norm will invite legal action and immediate arrest.”
To uphold the sanctity and security of the world-famous Rath Yatra, Harichandan also announced a complete ban on the use of mobile phones by servitors atop the chariots. “Mobile phones not only disturb the solemnity of the rituals but also pose security risks during the festival,” he remarked.
Addressing the recurring issue of delays during the Pahandi rituals, the Minister said that measures are being taken to streamline the process and avoid overcrowding. “We have directed the Chhatisa Nijog to prepare and submit a detailed plan clearly outlining the responsibilities and procedures for smooth execution of rituals,” he added.
Expressing confidence in the preparations, Harichandan assured that this year’s Rath Yatra would be conducted peacefully. “With the divine blessings of Mahaprabhu Jagannath, we are confident that devotees will experience a serene darshan and return without facing any trouble.”
The Minister further informed that invitations have been sent to several high-profile dignitaries, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Ministers of various states, and other notable personalities. However, official confirmations of their attendance are still awaited.
The Rath Yatra, scheduled for July 7 this year, is expected to witness lakhs of devotees from across the world. The state administration, in coordination with temple authorities, is ramping up efforts to ensure the smooth conduct of this ancient and revered festival.
