Bhadrak, April 18: A rare albino “Rana” snake was rescued from Chhuaal Singh area under Bant block of Bhadrak district on Saturday. The yellowish-white snake was first spotted by locals, who safely captured it and kept it in a plastic container before alerting the Snake Helpline.

Following the information, Snake Helpline General Secretary Shubhendu Mallik contacted Bhadrak Division ACF Sumit Mohanty and shared photographs of the snake, requesting immediate assistance. Acting on the request, forest officials rushed to the spot and brought the snake to the Bhadrak Range Office.

Officials said the snake had injuries near its mouth, prompting concerns over its health. The ACF has requested Snake Helpline members to assess its condition. As the reptile requires further medical attention, experts have advised shifting it to Nandankanan Zoological Park for treatment.

The rescued snake is considered extremely rare due to albinism—a genetic condition caused by the absence of melanin pigment. While a typical Rana snake has black and yellow bands, this specimen displays white coloration in place of black, with yellow patterns remaining unchanged.

Forest officials confirmed that necessary steps are being taken for its safe transfer and treatment.
