Holi, the festival of colours, brings together people of all ages to celebrate with joy, fun, and vibrant colours. However, with the excitement, it’s easy to overlook safety precautions and etiquette. To ensure a safe, enjoyable, and environmentally-friendly Holi celebration this year, here’s a list of 7 common mistakes to avoid.

1. Using Harmful Chemicals in Colours

Don’t: Avoid synthetic or chemical-laden colours that can harm your skin, eyes, or cause allergic reactions.

Do: Opt for organic, eco-friendly, and herbal colours. These are safer for your skin and the environment. Make sure the colours are FDA-approved and free from harmful substances.

2. Neglecting Skin Protection

Don’t: Skipping skin care before stepping out can lead to rashes, irritation, and sunburn.

Do: Apply a generous amount of sunscreen and coconut oil to your skin before heading out. This will form a protective layer and make it easier to wash off the colours later.

3. Overindulging in Bhang and Alcohol

Don’t: Excessive consumption of bhang (cannabis) or alcohol can impair judgment and lead to dangerous situations.

Do: Celebrate responsibly. If you decide to partake in bhang, consume it in moderation, and stay hydrated. Always keep an eye on your alcohol intake, and ensure you have a safe way to return home.

4. Ignoring the Environment

Don’t: Polluting water bodies or streets with chemical colours and water balloons.

Do: Celebrate with eco-friendly practices. Use water balloons sparingly and opt for natural, washable colours. Make sure to dispose of waste properly and avoid dumping colours in water sources.

5. Forgetting to Protect Eyes

Don’t: Allow coloured powder to enter your eyes, which can cause irritation and permanent damage.

Do: Wear protective eyewear, such as sunglasses, especially if you’re playing with powder colours. If any colour does get into your eyes, rinse them immediately with clean water.

6. Forgetting About Pets

Don’t: Let your pets roam freely in areas where colours are being thrown. Colours can be harmful to animals, causing skin issues or digestive problems if ingested.

Do: Keep pets indoors or in a safe space where they won’t be exposed to toxic colours. If you are using colours around your pets, make sure they are pet-friendly.

7. Disrespecting Personal Boundaries

Don’t: Force anyone to participate in the celebration if they are uncomfortable. Some people, especially the elderly, pregnant women, or those with health conditions, may prefer to avoid the festivities.

Do: Always ask for permission before applying colours on someone. Respect others’ preferences and maintain a safe distance, especially for those who might be allergic or sensitive to colours.
