Indian shuttler eyes first title of the 2025 season

Indian badminton star Lakshya Sen has fought his way into the summit clash of the Australian Open Super 500. In a semifinal match that felt more like a cinematic thriller than a standard sporting event, Sen overcame the veteran prowess of Taiwan's Chou Tien Chen to keep his hopes alive for a maiden title in 2025.

The clash in Sydney was a grueling test of endurance, lasting a massive 85 minutes. Sen, currently ranked World No. 12, had to dig deep into his reserves to secure a 17-21, 24-22, 21-16 victory. This marks his second final appearance of the year, following his run in Hong Kong, as he looks to end a challenging season on a high note.

The match was a brilliant display of contrasting styles. The 35-year-old Chou used his immense experience and geometric precision to control the pace, taking the first game 21-17. Chou’s ability to dictate rallies initially put the Indian Shuttler on the back foot. However, the turning point came in the dramatic second game.

Sen’s trademark defense—often seeing him dive across the court to retrieve impossible shots—became the defining factor. The drama peaked when Sen found himself trailing 18-20, facing two match points that would have eliminated him from the tournament. Displaying nerves of steel, he saved both points, forcing errors from Chou and eventually taking the game 24-22 with a series of relentless retrieves and sharp counter-attacks.

By the decider, the momentum had shifted decisively. While Chou remained defiant, Sen’s youthful energy and "slap-drive" shots began to wear the veteran down. The physical toll of the match was evident, but Sen’s superior fitness allowed him to close out the final game 21-16.

Although the Olympic medal remained elusive this year, this victory in the BWF World Tour event proves that Sen’s fighting spirit remains untouched. He now stands just one win away from lifting the trophy in what has been a rollercoaster season.
