Chennai, 10 Aug: Superstar Rajinikanth’s upcoming film Coolie has surged ahead in the highly anticipated Independence Day weekend box office race, surpassing Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR’s War 2 in early overseas advance bookings.
Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, Coolie has already amassed ₹1.81 crore from confirmed overseas bookings, with blocked seats pushing the total to ₹5.09 crore. Kerala leads the charge with ₹96.5 lakh in confirmed sales and ₹3.06 crore including blocked seats, followed by Tamil Nadu with ₹83.98 lakh confirmed and ₹2.01 crore overall.
Globally, the film’s opening-day pre-sales are nearing ₹30 crore, with North America contributing USD 1.42 million – USD 1.12 million from the Tamil version and USD 300,000 from the Telugu dubbed release.
In contrast, War 2, directed by Ayan Mukerji, has so far grossed USD 310,000 in North America, comprising USD 232,000 from the Telugu version and USD 78,000 from the Hindi release. The film’s all-India advance bookings open today, ahead of its 14 August release in Hindi, Telugu, and Tamil.
