Bhubaneswar, Sept 5: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast low chances of widespread rainfall across Odisha in the coming days. While the likelihood of heavy rain remains minimal, isolated showers accompanied by thunder are expected in different parts of the state on a daily basis.
According to the two-week forecast issued by the IMD, a cyclonic circulation is likely to develop over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining areas around September 8. Additionally, a low-pressure area may form over the northwestern Bay of Bengal and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal around September 13. However, the possible impact of this system is yet to be assessed.
The Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre reported that the current low-pressure system over northern Chhattisgarh and adjoining eastern Madhya Pradesh is expected to move west-northwestward within the next 24 hours, heading towards eastern Madhya Pradesh.
A monsoon trough is also extending across Odisha. Under its influence, several areas may receive rainfall with thunderstorms on Friday. However, starting Saturday, rainfall activity is likely to be limited to a few isolated pockets. On Thursday, several locations in the state experienced thunderstorm-induced showers.
Meanwhile, the Water Resources Department has reported heavy rainfall in the upper catchment of the Mahanadi river over the past 24 hours. As a result, ten sluice gates of the Hirakud Dam have been opened to release excess water. The dam is currently receiving 2.10 lakh cusecs of inflow, while 1.97 lakh cusecs of water is being discharged.
In a related development, the water level of the Baitarani River at Akhuapada has crossed the danger mark, raising concerns for nearby low-lying areas.
