Bhubaneswar, August 20: Indian Railways has launched an innovative initiative to improve sanitation facilities at NSG-6 category stations by installing modular bio-toilets using reusable components recovered from coaches during repair activities.
CMLR Workshop, Jhansi, has already installed the facilities at Matatila, Basai, Jakhora and Jiron stations through in-house manpower. Serviceable components such as FRP lavatory modules, bio-tanks and water tanks were refurbished and reused instead of being treated as scrap.
The initiative follows the “Waste to Wealth” principle, helping reduce material wastage and construction costs while creating hygienic and accessible sanitation facilities for passengers, including women, children, elderly persons and Divyangjan.
The innovative use of available railway resources and in-house technical expertise has enabled the economical and sustainable development of passenger amenities at stations serving nearby villages and surrounding areas.
