New Delhi, August 16: Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Sunday ordered immediate corrective measures to ensure the availability of safe drinking water at railway stations across the country, following a Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report that flagged the presence of harmful bacteria, includingE. coli, in water coolers at several stations.

Vaishnaw, along with senior railway officials, conducted a daylong review of the issue and directed authorities to take a series of corrective steps, according to a press note issued by the Railway Ministry.

The measures include installing water-filtration systems, replacing water tanks where necessary and conducting regular tests to monitor water quality.

PTI on Saturday was the first to report on the CAG audit, which covered more than 512 railway stations and revealed serious concerns over poor water quality and inadequate passenger amenities.

The minister’s intervention comes amid growing concern over the safety of drinking water available to millions of passengers at railway stations nationwide.
