Bhubaneswar, Feb 26: Odisha is set to launch a dedicated vaccination programme to protect adolescent girls from cervical cancer, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi scheduled to inaugurate the initiative on February 28. The announcement was made by Odisha Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling on Wednesday.

As part of the ambitious vaccination drive, girls up to 14 years of age will receive a single-dose vaccine, while those above 14 and until marriage will be administered three doses, according to the newly issued guidelines.

In addition to this, the state will kick off the ‘Mukhyamantri Karkata Chikitsha Abhiyaan’ (Chief Minister's Cancer Treatment Program) in the 2026-27 financial year, with a substantial allocation of Rs 311 crore. The initiative aims to enhance cancer prevention and treatment efforts throughout the state, targeting multiple forms of the disease.

Minister Mahaling highlighted the importance of the immunization programme, stating, “On the 28th, an immunization programme for cervical cancer will be launched. In Odisha, the Chief Minister and I will be present. To prevent cervical cancer, a single-dose system will be implemented for girls up to 14 years of age. Additionally, for those from 14 years until marriage, there will be a three-dose regimen.”

The ‘Mukhyamantri Karkata Chikitsha Abhiyaan’ will focus on improving cancer prevention and treatment infrastructure across Odisha, addressing cervical cancer, breast cancer, and other types of cancer. With the Rs 311 crore allocation, the state government reaffirms its commitment to tackling cancer and providing better healthcare for its citizens.
