Puri, Oct 22: The holy city of Puri witnessed traditional immersion processions on Wednesday as part of Vijaya Dashami celebrations. The clay idol of Goddess Kakudikhai, regarded as a representative of Goddess Bimala at the Shree Jagannath Temple, was taken out of her shrine late at night and paraded through the city. Traditional offerings, known as panti, were made before the idol was immersed ahead of daybreak.
Immersion processions were also held for Goddess Durga idols worshipped at Bada Shankha, Market Chhak, in front of the District School and at Durga Badi.
On Thursday, Puri will celebrate Gosani Ekadashi, with a ceremonial gathering of deities, known as Devi Sabha, scheduled at the Singhadwara of the Shree Jagannath Temple. Gosani idols from various neighbourhoods will be brought in processions to participate in the gathering, marking the culmination of the famous Gosani Yatra.
Harchandi Sahi emerged as a major attraction during the celebrations, with the neighbourhood illuminated by decorative lights and around 15 puja pandals showcasing various deities.
Puri District Collector Dibyajyoti Parida and Superintendent of Police Prateek Singh visited several pandals and offered prayers. Organisers felicitated the officials with traditional ceremonial scarves.
The festivities also featured Naga idols, regarded as symbols of valour, and several mythological figures. At Markandeshwar Sahi, a large representation of Sampati, the mythical bird from the Ramayana, drew visitors. Its wings feature eight legendary warriors, including Hanuman, Angada and Jambavan.
A specially prepared pond near Shri Setu will be used for the immersion of the deities. The Shrikhetra Gosani Puja Committee and district administration are coordinating arrangements to ensure the smooth and orderly conduct of the immersion processions.
