Puri, July 19: A minor girl student from Nimapada, who was allegedly doused with kerosene and set on fire by unidentified miscreants, is currently battling for her life at AIIMS Bhubaneswar. Doctors have confirmed that the victim has sustained 70% burn injuries and remains in critical condition.
Puri District Collector Chanchal Rana termed the incident “extremely painful” and confirmed that preliminary reports indicate the involvement of miscreants in setting the girl ablaze. “She was immediately admitted to the local hospital and later shifted to AIIMS, Bhubaneswar. The district administration has provided initial financial aid, and all medical expenses will be borne by the State Government and the district administration,” Rana said. He also assured that officials are in constant communication with AIIMS doctors to monitor the girl's condition.
The growing frequency of attacks on women in Odisha has triggered widespread concern. Both BJD and Congress leaders highlighted the rise on gender based violence and criticized the state goverrnment’s failure to ensure women’ safety.
Political and administrative leaders have responded swiftly to the incident. Teams from both the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and the Indian National Congress visited the victim at AIIMS, expressing solidarity and demanding justice.
Director General of Police (DGP) YB Khurania visited the hospital and met the victim. Calling the attack “deeply distressing,” the DGP assured that strict and prompt action will be taken against those responsible. “No one involved in this heinous act will be spared,” he stated. Local police have launched a full-scale investigation into the incident.
This tragic case has once again brought the issue of women’s safety in Odisha to the forefront, prompting demands for stronger law enforcement and preventive measures.
