Harvansh Pangalia shines as India dominates South Africa in Benoni

India’s rising cricket stars began their tour of South Africa with a commanding performance, securing a 25-run victory in the opening Youth ODI at Willowmoore Park. Despite weather interruptions that brought the DLS method into play, the "Boys in Blue" showed remarkable composure to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Pangalia and Ambrish Anchor the Innings

After being asked to bat first, India faced some early jitters, losing top-order wickets cheaply. However, the momentum shifted drastically when Harvansh Pangalia and RS Ambrish joined forces. Pangalia played a magnificent knock of 93 from 95 deliveries, laced with seven boundaries and two sixes. He was well-supported by Ambrish, who contributed a steady 65.

Their century partnership for the fifth wicket revived the Indian innings, taking the score from a precarious 67/4 to a position of strength. A late cameo by Khilan Patel, who smashed 26 off just 12 balls, helped India post a formidable total of 301. For the South African side, JJ Basson was the most effective bowler, finishing with figures of 4 for 54.

Rain and DLS Drama

South Africa’s response was steady but struggled to keep up with the required rate. Jorich Van Schalkwyk fought a lonely battle with an unbeaten 60, and Armaan Manack added 46 before a sharp run-out ended his stay. Just as the match was reaching its climax, lightning and heavy rain forced the players off the field.

At the time of the interruption, South Africa was 148/4 after 27.4 overs. Under the DLS calculations, the revised target for the hosts was 174, leaving them 25 runs short of the mark. Deepesh Devendran was the standout performer with the ball for India, picking up two wickets and maintaining pressure during the powerplay.

This victory sets a positive tone for the Indian squad as they prepare for the remaining matches. The team’s ability to post a big total and defend it under pressure bodes well for the future of Indian junior cricket.
