Berhampur, Dec 15: In a remarkable demonstration of multidisciplinary coordination and advanced surgical expertise, doctors at SUM Hospital at Sitalapalli here, have successfully removed a massive neck tumour from a 32-year-old male patient, marking yet another significant milestone in the hospital’s rapidly expanding super-speciality services.

The patient had reported to the outpatient department with a huge swelling on the right side of the neck that had been progressively increasing over the past four years. Detailed clinical assessment followed by CT imaging revealed a large solid mass measuring approximately 9.7 × 6.5 × 13.6 cm, located in the right posterior neck space between the sternocleidomastoid muscle and right paraspinal muscles. The tumour had extended retrosternally into the upper mediastinum and caused marked displacement of vital structures, including compression of the trachea towards the left side and close proximity to the carotid vessels, thyroid gland and subclavian vein.

Considering the size, complexity and involvement of critical anatomical structures, a meticulously planned multidisciplinary surgical approach was adopted involving CTVS, ENT, Oncology, and Anaesthesia teams. The surgery was performed through a transverse neck incision with careful, layer-by-layer dissection. The carotid sheath and its contents were successfully preserved, and the tumour was completely excised without injury to the trachea or major blood vessels. Meticulous haemostasis was achieved and a drain was placed post-operatively. The patient is currently stable and recovering well.

The surgical team comprised Dr. Sameer Panigrahi, CTVS Surgeon, Dr. Priyajeet Panigrahi, Senior ENT Surgeon and Dr. Sairudra Puhan, Onco Surgeon, with anaesthesia support led by Dr. Pratyuaj Kanti Mishra, assisted by a dedicated OT nursing and paramedical team.

Congratulating the entire team, Deba Prasad Dash, Director, said that the hospital has successfully carried out several major and complex surgeries for the first time in the Berhampur region, including a number of rare and challenging oncological procedures. He emphasized that these achievements reflected the institution’s strong commitment to delivering advanced tertiary-level healthcare locally.

SUM Hospital, Sitalapalli, is currently providing comprehensive super-speciality services including Cardiology, Nephrology, Urology, Oncology with chemotherapy services, Neurology, and Neurosurgery, along with a 24×7 Trauma Care Centre, Emergency Services, and Dialysis facilities. The hospital continues to strengthen its round-the-clock critical care, emergency and diagnostic services to ensure accessible, affordable, and advanced healthcare for the people of south Odisha, he said.
