PM Modi to Embark on Ambitious Diplomatic Tour
In one of his most significant diplomatic engagements in recent years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on an intensive eight-day, five-nation tour starting July 2. The extensive journey will span two continents, covering Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia, reflecting India's deepening strategic outreach to partners in Africa and Latin America.
This tour is characteristic of the Prime Minister's high-energy approach to foreign policy, featuring back-to-back meetings and minimal downtime to maximize diplomatic output. It will be his second five-nation tour during his tenure, following a similar trip in 2016. The demanding schedule is designed to bolster partnerships across a range of critical sectors, from energy and defense to agriculture and technology.
Itinerary and Key Objectives
The tour will commence in Ghana (July 2-3), marking the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister in three decades. Discussions are expected to center on strengthening trade, defense cooperation, and development partnerships.
From there, the Prime Minister will travel to Trinidad and Tobago (July 3-4) for his first visit to the Caribbean nation. At the invitation of Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, he is expected to address a joint session of the country's Parliament, a significant diplomatic honor.
The next stop will be Argentina (July 4-5), where he will meet with President Javier Milei. The agenda will likely focus on enhancing cooperation in energy, agriculture, and mining, as well as boosting bilateral trade between the two nations.
The longest leg of the tour will be in Brazil (July 5-8), where Prime Minister Modi will attend the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro. This will be his fourth visit to the country, and it includes a state visit and extensive bilateral talks with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Several other high-level meetings are also anticipated on the sidelines of the summit, which is a cornerstone of the trip.
The final stop will be in Namibia on July 9. This will be his first visit to the country and only the third-ever by an Indian Prime Minister. He will meet with President Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah in Windhoek and is also likely to address the Namibian Parliament.
This ambitious tour highlights a concerted effort to fortify India's relationships with emerging economies and key players in the Global South, reinforcing India's role as a leading voice in international forums like BRICS.
