Kolkata, February 15: On Sunday, thousands of devotees gathered at the historic Bhootnath Temple in Kolkata to observe the sacred rituals and offer prayers in celebration of Mahashivratri. The temple, located near Nimtala Ghat, saw a massive turnout as worshippers performed their puja in honor of the occasion. Bhootnath Temple, over 300 years old, is renowned for its unique ritual known asBhasmarati, where Aarti is performed using wood from burning pyres—a tradition dating back to the temple's establishment by an ascetic near the cremation ground.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his greetings for Mahashivratri, praying for the well-being and prosperity of all citizens. In a post on X, the Prime Minister called on the blessings of Lord Shiva, highlighting how His divine grace brings peace, prosperity, and spiritual strength to both individuals and the nation. "To all my family members across the country, countless best wishes on Mahashivratri. My prayer is that Adidev Mahadev always keep His grace upon everyone. By His blessings, may all be blessed with well-being and may our Bharatvarsh sit enthroned at the peak of prosperity," PM Modi wrote.

Mahashivratri, celebrated with immense devotion across India, marks the divine union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Devotees engage in fasting, prayer offerings, and night-long vigils to seek the blessings of the deity. According to Hindu mythology, on the night of their marriage, Lord Shiva was escorted to Goddess Parvati's home by a diverse group of gods, goddesses, animals, and demons. The Shiva-Shakti duo symbolizes the ultimate blend of love, power, and unity. Mahashivratri, which commemorates their sacred union, is celebrated with fervor and enthusiasm throughout the country.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also offered his greetings on this auspicious occasion. He is scheduled to visit Coimbatore later today to join the Mahashivratri celebrations at the Isha Yoga Centre. Taking to X, Singh wrote, "On the auspicious occasion of Mahashivratri, I extend my heartfelt greetings to everyone. Today, I shall be at Isha Yoga Center in Coimbatore to attend the 'Maha Shivratri' celebrations. Looking forward to it."
