Preparations in full swing for Ghatagaon Raja Mahotsav in Keonjhar

Keonjhar, June 11: With the iconic Raja festival just a few days away, preparations are in full swing across Ghata Gaon area of Keonjhar district, where the celebration is observed with great enthusiasm as the Raja Mahotsav. The festival, deeply rooted in Odia culture, tradition, and heritage, is being organised with special arrangements by local Raja committees to make the event more attractive this year.

In Ghatagaon block, villages such as Uparadih, Binajhari, Patana, Gadadharpur, and Sitabinjhi are known for grand Raja celebrations. This year, the Raja Mahotsav in Uparadih village has drawn special attention with the construction of over a hundred swings (dolis) at a single venue. Preparations began nearly a month in advance, with villagers actively involved in every stage—from collecting wood in nearby forests to digging pits and installing poles. People of all ages are working together with enthusiasm, reflecting strong community participation.

Locals said that what earlier used to be celebrated separately in different hamlets has now been organised at a single place for the past 13 years to promote unity and brotherhood among villagers. Over the years, the festival has gained popularity and recognition across Keonjhar district, attracting visitors from nearby and distant areas who come to enjoy the swings and cultural programmes.

Organisers have also planned various cultural events, including musical performances, dance programmes, and competitions at the swing ground to enhance the festive atmosphere. Safety arrangements have been prioritised, with the committee seeking support from police, fire services, and health departments to ensure a smooth and accident-free celebration.
