Bhubaneswar, Jan 23: People from all walks of life united to pay their heartfelt tributes to the legendary freedom fighter, Veer Surendra Sai, on his 218th birth anniversary. Born on January 23, 1809, into a royal family, Veer Surendra Sai devoted his life to the cause of India’s freedom, making extraordinary sacrifices for his people. His legacy continues to inspire generations, reminding everyone of the tremendous price paid for India’s independence.

Veer Surendra Sai played a pivotal role in the First War of Independence in 1857, where he joined forces with other leaders to resist the British East India Company’s oppressive rule. His military prowess and strategic acumen made him a formidable opponent against the British. Although the uprising ultimately faced setbacks, Sai's resistance remained steadfast.

The Struggle for Odisha:

After the failure of the 1857 rebellion, Veer Surendra Sai shifted his focus to the liberation of his home state, Odisha. He led a relentless battle against British authorities who sought to annex Odisha’s princely states, including Sambalpur, into their empire. Sai became a symbol of defiance and resilience as he opposed these attempts and inspired many to join the struggle.

Recognizing the threat he posed, the British employed devious tactics to capture him. In 1864, Sai was falsely accused of murder, leading to his arrest and imprisonment. Despite being confined to Hazaribagh Central Jail, he remained defiant, continuing to lead protests against British policies.

Veer Surendra Sai endured nearly 36 years of captivity, facing unimaginable hardships, yet never relenting in his commitment to India’s freedom. His sacrifice and unwavering dedication to his people earned him the title of “Veer” (brave) Surendra Sai.

A Legacy of Courage and Resilience:

Veer Surendra Sai’s legacy is firmly etched in Indian history as a symbol of courage, sacrifice, and resilience. His unyielding fight for freedom continues to inspire the people of Odisha and the nation at large. Memorials like the Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology in Burla stand as lasting tributes to his enduring impact.

As we celebrate his 217th birth anniversary, we remember not only his remarkable life but also draw inspiration from his struggle for justice and freedom. His legacy serves as a reminder that the fight for independence is a collective responsibility, and the spirit of resistance can overcome even the most powerful of oppressors.
