Assam, Jan 5: A strong earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale hit Assam and other parts of Northeast India early this morning, sending tremors across the region. The earthquake struck at 4:17 am, with its epicenter located near Morigaon district in Assam, as reported by the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the Indian government’s nodal agency for monitoring seismic activity.

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 50 kilometers, with the NCS sharing the following details on social media:

"EQ of M: 5.1, On: 05/01/2026 04:17:40 IST, Lat: 26.37 N, Long: 92.29 E, Depth: 50 Km, Location: Morigaon, Assam."

Tremors were felt across central Assam, particularly in Morigaon and nearby districts. Many residents, shaken by the unexpected jolt, rushed out of their homes, even though cold and foggy weather conditions added to the chaos. Despite the panic, there have been no immediate reports of fatalities or significant damage to property.

The epicenter of the earthquake lies in the Kopili fault line, an area known for frequent seismic activity in the past. The region is part of India’s most seismically sensitive zone, making it more vulnerable to such natural events.

The National Center for Seismology has urged residents to remain alert and follow safety protocols during such tremors.
