Bhubaneswar, Oct 26: A low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal has intensified into a Deep Depression and is currently moving west-northwestwards at around 10 kmph, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

As of 5:30 AM IST on October 26, 2025, the system was centered near latitude 11.1°N and longitude 87.2°E. It lies approximately 610 km west of Port Blair (Andaman & Nicobar Islands), 790 km east-southeast of Chennai (Tamil Nadu), 850 km south-southeast of Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), 840 km southeast of Kakinada (Andhra Pradesh), and 950 km south-southeast of Gopalpur (Odisha).

The IMD reports that the Deep Depression is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal within the next 24 hours. It is likely to continue moving northwestwards and strengthen further into a severe cyclonic storm by the morning of October 28.

The system is projected to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, near Kakinada, on the evening or night of October 28, with maximum sustained wind speeds of 90–100 kmph, gusting up to 110 kmph.

Authorities have issued alerts and advisories for coastal regions of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, urging residents to stay prepared for potential heavy rainfall and strong winds.

In Odisha, the Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari said the state is fully prepared to handle the possible impact of the approaching storm. He confirmed that departments of health, water resources, and energy have been placed on high alert.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over coastal and southern Odisha districts from October 27 to 29, and the IMD has issued a yellow alert across the state. Some areas may experience extremely heavy rainfall during this period.

Additionally, squally winds reaching 40–50 kmph, with gusts up to 60 kmph, are likely to affect the southern coastal areas of Odisha starting October 27. Disaster management teams have been deployed and monitoring the situation closely.
