The BEML-built train aims to redefine overnight journeys in India.

Indian Railways has achieved a major success with its new Vande Bharat Sleeper train, which clocked a top speed of 180 km/h during a trial run. This successful test was conducted on the Sawai Madhopur–Kota–Nagda section of the West Central Railway (WCR).

This milestone is a significant step forward for 'Mission Gati Shakti', the government's initiative to improve speed and efficiency across the national rail network. The new sleeper train is poised to revolutionize overnight travel in India.

Designed for Safety and Speed

The advanced trainset was designed and developed by BEML Limited. It features a robust stainless-steel body and advanced crashworthy elements, including special buffers and couplers, to ensure maximum passenger safety.

The train also meets the highest fire safety standards (EN45545 HL3). It combines speed, comfort, and safety in a modern, fully integrated package built for long-distance journeys.

A Look Inside the Coaches

This first Vande Bharat Sleeper trainset includes 16 coaches and can accommodate 823 passengers. The configuration is:

11 AC Three-tier coaches (611 berths)

4 AC Two-tier coaches (188 berths)

1 AC First-class coach (24 berths)

While its design speed is 180 km/h, it is expected to operate at 160 km/h.

Passengers can expect a premium experience with features like integrated reading lights, USB charging ports, CCTV cameras for security, and sensor-based inter-communication doors. The train also includes modular pantries and spacious luggage areas.

New Comforts for All Passengers

A key focus of the new design is inclusivity, with special berths and toilets provided for differently-abled passengers.

For those in First AC, the train offers a new level of luxury, including showers with hot water and plush, modern interiors.

This successful trial brings India one step closer to world-class, high-speed overnight travel. While these trials are ongoing, passengers in Odisha are hopeful that these new rakes will soon be allocated to the East Coast Railway (ECoR), offering new high-speed connections from cities like Bhubaneswar.
