Winter Tightens Grip on Odisha: Koraput Shivers at 5.5°C

Winter has firmly established its presence across Odisha, bringing dropping temperatures and blankets of fog to several districts. The latest weather observations from the Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, indicate that the chill is here to stay for the coming week.

Coldest Pockets in the State

Koraput has emerged as the coldest spot in the state, recording a shivering lowest minimum temperature of 5.5°C among hill stations. In the plains, Phulbani took the lead as the coldest town with a minimum temperature of 8.0°C. While most of the state experienced dry weather, the drop in mercury is palpable, especially during the late night and early morning hours.

On the other end of the spectrum, Paralakhemundi recorded the highest maximum temperature at 29.2°C, showing a significant contrast in weather conditions across the region.

Fog Warning Issued for Next 5 Days

Visibility has become a major concern for commuters. The regional weather office has issued a forecast for shallow to moderate fog likely to occur during early morning hours over the next five days, valid until December 27, 2025.

Residents in isolated pockets of the following districts should exercise caution due to reduced visibility: Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Koraput, Jagatsinghpur, Sonepur, Bolangir, Kendrapada, Kandhamal and Kalahandi

Realized weather data confirms that dense fog has already affected areas like Rourkela, Bolangir, Sonepur, Jharsuguda and Phulbani, where visibility dropped between 50 to 200 meters. Moderate Fog in Bhawanipatna and Koraput. Shallow fog observed in Baripada, Paradip, Keonjhar, Sambalpur and Hirakud

Temperature Outlook for the Week

According to the latest Odisha Weather Update, there will be no large change in the minimum temperature (night temperature) over the districts of Odisha during the next seven days. This consistency suggests that the cold wave conditions will remain steady without immediate relief.

In the Twin Cities, winter is also being felt. Bhubaneswar recorded a minimum temperature of 13.6°C, while Cuttack was slightly cooler at 12.4°C.

Residents are advised to stay updated with official forecasts, especially when planning early morning travel in fog-prone districts.
