New Delhi, Feb 19: The holy month of Ramadan began today on February 19, 2026. The crescent moon, signaling the start of Ramadan, has been sighted in India.

However, the moon was not visible in Delhi and NCR due to cloud cover and rain. Despite this, confirmations of the moon's appearance have been received from various parts of India, including Patna and Aurangabad in Bihar, as well as several regions of Jharkhand.

Ramadan depends on the sighting of the crescent moon, which indicates the beginning of the Islamic month of fasting. As per the Islamic calendar, the month can last either 29 or 30 days based on the moon's appearance.

Imam Maulana Mufti Mukarram Ahmad of Fatehpuri Masjid in Chandni Chowk, Delhi, mentioned that clouds had been prevalent over Delhi and Haryana since the morning, preventing the moon from being seen. In contrast, many other parts of the country had confirmed sightings.

As per the schedule, the first day of fasting will be observed on February 19. The fast (roza) lasts from dawn to sunset, during which Muslims refrain from eating and drinking. In the evening, special prayers called Tarawih are held at mosques, during which the entire Qur'an is recited.

According to the prayer timetable for Delhi, on February 19, the time for sehri (pre-dawn meal) is end at 5:26 am, and the time for iftar (breaking the fast) will be at 6:16 pm.
