PM Carney offers condolences after mass shooting in BC

Canada is reeling from a heartbreaking tragedy after a violent rampage in British Columbia left ten people dead and dozens injured. Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed profound devastation on Wednesday following the horrific events in the small community of Tumbler Ridge. The incident, which took place at a secondary school and a nearby home, is being described as one of the deadliest mass shootings the country has seen in recent years.

Chaos erupted on Tuesday afternoon when the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) received reports of an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School around 1:20 pm. Officers rushed to the scene to find a nightmare unfolding. According to updates from CBC News, six victims were found lifeless inside the school building. Another victim tragically died while being transported to the hospital, and two more bodies were discovered at a residence connected to the incident.

Authorities confirmed that the suspect, identified in emergency alerts as a woman, was found dead at the scene from a self-inflicted injury. Police have stated they do not believe there are further threats to the public.

Prime Minister Carney took to social media to share the nation’s collective grief. He described the violence as "horrific" and offered his deepest prayers to those who lost loved ones. "I am devastated by today's horrific shootings in Tumbler Ridge, B.C.," Carney wrote on X. He emphasized that the country stands united in empathy and compassion, praising the bravery of first responders who risked their lives to protect students and staff.

Carney has since connected with British Columbia Premier David Eby and federal public safety officials to coordinate support for the shattered community.

Tumbler Ridge, a remote town of about 2,400 people located northeast of Vancouver, remains in a state of shock. The secondary school, which serves approximately 160 students, along with a local elementary school, was placed under a "hold and secure" lockdown as the tragedy unfolded. Schools in the area will remain closed for the remainder of the week to allow families to grieve and investigators to process the scene.

Medical teams worked tirelessly to treat the wounded. Two individuals were airlifted with life-threatening injuries, while 25 others received treatment for various wounds at the local health centre. As the investigation continues, the motive behind this senseless violence remains unclear.
