Hundreds Run for Glory Marking Major Port Foundation Milestone

Energy and enthusiasm took over the port township this Saturday as the Paradip Port Authority (PPA) commemorated a significant milestone. Celebrating its 65th Foundation Day, the administration successfully hosted the 21st edition of the prestigious Paradip Marathon 2026. Organized by the Gopabandhu Kreeda Sansad, the event brought together athletes and citizens in a display of endurance and community spirit.

Running enthusiasts gathered early at the Hanuman Temple Square, where the 14-kilometer run was flagged off. PPA Chairman Shri P. L. Haranadh officiated as the Chief Guest, joined by Guest of Honour Shri T. Venu Gopal, Deputy Chairman of PPA. The route witnessed cheering residents offering support before the runners crossed the finish line at Gopabandhu Stadium.

Record Participation and Winners

This year, the Paradip Marathon 2026 saw a robust turnout of 336 participants, comprising 280 men and 56 women. The competition was fierce, with athletes from Odisha and neighboring states vying for the top spot.

In the men’s category, massive cheers erupted for local talent as Shri Ashok Dandasena of the Odisha Police clinched the first prize. He completed the grueling course with an impressive timing of 43 minutes and 52.2 seconds. Shri Gulson Dung Dung from Ranchi followed closely to take second place at 44 minutes 11.9 seconds, while Jharkhand’s Shri Rakesh Mahanta secured the third spot.

The women’s category saw a dominant performance by Ms. Anita Das from Jharkhand, who took gold by finishing in 51 minutes and 08.4 seconds. Ms. Sandhya Murmu from Mayurbhanj secured the second position, and Ms. Basanti Mandia of the Odisha Police finished third.

Celebrating Growth and Future Goals

Addressing the gathering during the valedictory function, Shri Haranadh reflected on the port's journey since its foundation stone was laid on January 3, 1962. He noted that the facility has evolved from a humble jetty into India’s most cost-efficient major port with the highest berth productivity.

Looking ahead, the Chairman outlined an ambitious vision, stating that the port is steadily moving toward a capacity of 400 MMT by 2030. He emphasized that this growth is driven by modernization, employee welfare, and a commitment to green development. He likened the port's progress to the marathon, citing discipline and collective effort as key drivers of success.

Honoring Sporting Excellence

A highlight of the ceremony was the special felicitation of Odisha’s rising sprinting star, Pratik Maharana. Recently, Pratik made the state proud by bagging a bronze in the 200m event and a silver in the 4x100m relay at the 4th South Asian Senior Athletics Championships 2025.

The event concluded smoothly thanks to the efforts of the Paradip Port Sports Council and officials from the Odisha Olympic Association.
