Kazan [Russia], October 23: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the 16th BRICS Summit during the Closed Plenary Session in Kazan, Russia, emphasized the need for unified action against terrorism and terror financing.
He stressed that there is "no place for double standards" in the global fight against terrorism and urged BRICS nations to work collectively to prevent the radicalization of youth.
PM Modi highlighted the importance of addressing the long-pending Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism at the United Nations. He also pointed to the necessity of global regulations for cybersecurity and artificial intelligence (AI), given the emerging technological challenges.
Chinese President Xi Jinping, attending the summit, was also present amid past tensions, such as China’s 2022 block on designating Pakistan-based LeT terrorist Sajid Mir as a global terrorist.
In his address, PM Modi reiterated the need for reform in global institutions like the UN Security Council, the WTO, and multilateral development banks.
He emphasized that BRICS should be perceived as an organization aiming to reform global institutions, not replace them. He also stressed the importance of addressing the needs of the Global South, a focus India championed during its Voice of Global South Summit and G20 Presidency.
Acknowledging the current global challenges, such as wars, economic uncertainty, climate change, and terrorism, Modi called for BRICS to maintain a people-centric approach. He emphasized that BRICS should promote dialogue and diplomacy, advocating for a united front to secure a prosperous future for coming generations.
