Eurasian Stability and Connectivity Take Focus at SCO Gathering
Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially signed a joint declaration alongside fellow member state leaders during the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek. Addressing the high-level gathering on Tuesday, he strongly condemned global terrorism, calling for the complete eradication of its entire ecosystem, which includes financing networks, recruitment channels, radicalisation efforts, and safe havens. He stressed that nations using terrorism as a policy tool must realize it can never serve as a strategic asset.
Geopolitical Stability and Afghan Relief
Historically, India has prioritized Central Asian stability to secure its own geopolitical interests against regional volatility. Expanding on this priority, Modi highlighted that establishing a peaceful Eurasia directly ties to maintaining stability within Afghanistan. He reaffirmed India’s ongoing commitment to delivering developmental and humanitarian aid to the Afghan population. Focusing on international conflicts, the Prime Minister noted that regional crises, particularly in West Asia, quickly ripple outward to disrupt energy security, maritime trade, and global supply chains. Developing nations of the Global South inevitably bear the heaviest burden when such global disruptions occur. Resolving these tensions requires dialogue and diplomacy rather than battlefield confrontations, according to his address.
Enhancing Regional Security Mechanisms
To tackle modern security challenges, he urged SCO mechanisms to enhance practical coordination against drug trafficking, organised crime, and information security threats. He emphasized that cooperation must directly benefit citizens, proposing that people-to-people ties should form the core of the alliance over the next twenty-five years. Kyrgyzstan President Sadyr Japarov chaired the gathering, which brought together ten member states, fifteen partner countries, and two observer nations. World leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping, participated in the discussions aimed at advancing dialogue on regional and global issues. True success for the organisation, Modi concluded, will be measured by the creation of new opportunities for youth, expanded markets for entrepreneurs, and technological advancements for farmers.
