New Delhi, July 15: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday expressed deep condolences over the demise of legendary marathoner Fauja Singh 'Turbaned Tornado’ at the age of 114 years.

Singh, believed to be the world's oldest marathon runner, died after being hit by a car in his ancestral village in Punjab's Jalandhar district at the age of 114.

Taking to his official ‘X’ handle, PM Modi expressed his grief and said Singh stood out as an exceptional athlete, known for his remarkable determination.

"Fauja Singh Ji was extraordinary because of his unique persona and the manner in which he inspired the youth of India on a very important topic of fitness. He was an exceptional athlete with incredible determination. Pained by his passing away. My thoughts are with his family and countless admirers around the world," wrote PM Modi.

It is worth mentioning that Fauja Singh, famously known as the 'Sikh Superman,' captivated the world by breaking numerous records as a marathon runner across various age categories.

Beginning his running journey at the age of 89 with the 2000 London Marathon, he went on to complete six more editions of the race, along with marathons in Toronto, New York, and several other cities.
