Prime Minister Modi makes history at Seychelles golden jubilee
Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended Seychelles’ 50th Independence Day festivities on Sunday as an official Guest of Honour. This marks a historic milestone, establishing him as India's first prime minister to receive this specific distinction from the island nation. Demonstrating strong bilateral ties, Indian Navy and Army contingents marched in Victoria's parade, accompanied by a naval band. Highlighting this diplomatic warmth, two Indian warships, INS Tarkash and INS Ikshak, proudly anchored at the vibrant Port Victoria.
Discussions between Modi and Seychelles President Patrick Herminie centered on elevating bilateral cooperation across critical sectors. Both leaders explored ways to advance healthcare, digital infrastructure, renewable energy, and maritime defence. India views this alliance as a core component of its Vision Mahasagar framework, aiming to guarantee collective security and sustainable growth throughout the Indian Ocean region.
Global and regional threats occupied a significant portion of their dialogue. Officials addressed pressing Indian Ocean concerns, particularly illegal fishing, piracy, and drug trafficking networks. Leaders reviewed ongoing projects funded by India's Special Economic Package, expressing mutual satisfaction with current progress. Reaffirming New Delhi's steadfast commitment, Modi promised continued support for Port Victoria's long-term economic development priorities to ensure lasting regional stability.
