New Delhi, July 6: Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated reformist candidate Masoud Pezeshkian on Saturday for his win in Iran's presidential runoff election.
"Looking forward to working closely with you to further strengthen our warm and long-standing bilateral relationship for the benefit of our peoples and the region," Modi wrote on social media platform X.
Despite Tehran's strained relations with Western countries, including the United States, India maintains warm ties with Iran. Concurrently, New Delhi is also enhancing security cooperation with Washington.
In May, both nations signed an agreement to develop and equip the long-delayed Chabahar port project in Iran. This move prompted warnings from Washington, cautioning Indian firms involved in the project about potential sanctions.
Masoud Pezeshkian secured approximately 54 percent of the vote in the second round of the presidential runoff election, defeating ultraconservative rival Saeed Jalili, who garnered around 44 percent.
The election, originally scheduled for 2025, was expedited following the untimely death of President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash.
