The Kolkata gang rape of a young doctor highlights a critical need for heightened awareness and preparedness. The brutal attack not only underscored the dangers women can face but also emphasized the importance of societal changes and personal safety measures. In the wake of such tragedies, the emphasis on self-defense, awareness, and trust in one's instincts becomes more pronounced. As we process these events, let us remember that while we work towards systemic changes, personal vigilance and empowerment are crucial steps for ensuring safety in our daily lives. Prameya English spoke with several women to gather their perspectives on women's safety.

Little Das, a mother of two young daughters from Jajpur, shares her concerns: “The incidents involving girls are truly distressing. While we may not be able to change those who commit such heinous acts, we can educate our daughters about taking safety precautions when necessary.”

She advises her daughters to avoid sharing personal information on social media that could disclose their location or routines. “It’s also important to use apps that allow sharing your location with trusted friends or family. Always keep your phone charged and within reach. Be cautious when meeting new people or going to unfamiliar places alone. If you’re using ride-sharing apps, make sure the driver’s details match what’s provided,” Little Das recommends.

Sangeeta Sahoo, a housewife, observes that while Indian tradition honors women, they remain among the most vulnerable. She reflects, "I enjoyed independence in my father's home, and my husband grants me freedom as well. However, I worry for my daughters' safety as they go to school, tuition, or elsewhere, given the frequent reports of harassment and molestation. Trusting even our neighbors can be challenging. For true change, men must view and respect every girl as valuable, but women must also assertively advocate for their own safety when needed."

"Awareness is key.The more you pay attention to your environment, the more you can anticipate potential dangers and avoid them," says Priya Das, a self-defense instructor. "Being aware of who is around you and what is happening in your vicinity can help you avoid risky situations before they escalate", she said..

"If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t. Trusting your gut feelings can be a powerful tool in staying safe," advises Meera Sharma, a women's safety advocate. "Your intuition often picks up on subtle cues that your rational mind might miss. If you feel uneasy, take precautions or remove yourself from the situation", said she.

"Educating yourself about self-defense and personal safety can make a significant difference. It's not just about physical skills, but also about mental preparedness," asserts Rina Mishra, a personal safety coach. Taking self-defense classes and learning about personal safety measures can provide both practical skills and confidence.
