Bhubaneswar, May 13: In a much-needed move aimed at improving commuter comfort, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has installed a permanent white shade structure at the busy AG Square junction.
The installation comes as a welcome relief for daily commuters who have long endured Bhubaneswar’s intense summer heat and unpredictable rainfall while waiting at traffic signals. The newly erected canopy is designed not only for durability but also for functionality, with its white surface reflecting sunlight to help reduce heat underneath.
“This shade will provide commuters some respite from the scorching sun and occasional showers, especially during peak traffic hours,” said a BMC official. “It’s part of our larger effort to improve public infrastructure and enhance urban comfort.”
The choice of a white, sun-reflective material means helmets and vehicle seats are less likely to overheat — a common problem for two-wheeler riders in the city. Commuters have already started noticing the difference, with many appreciating the effort toward making the city more commuter-friendly.
The structure is part of ongoing urban development initiatives under the Smart City project, and similar installations are expected in other high-traffic areas in the near future.
