Bhubaneswar, Jan 6: A major cigarette smuggling operation has been busted at Bhubaneswar Airport, with customs officials seizing cigarettes worth an estimated ₹10 lakh. Along with the seizure, five individuals have been detained by the D.R.I. (Directorate of Revenue Intelligence), and investigations are ongoing by the Customs Department.
According to reports, eight individuals were arriving in Bhubaneswar from Dubai.
Acting on a tip-off from intelligence sources, a joint team from Customs and D.R.I. detained the individuals and conducted a thorough search.
During the investigation, a large quantity of contraband cigarettes was found, which is estimated to be worth ₹10 lakh. Additionally, two iPhone 17 models were also seized from the suspects.
The seized cigarettes were reportedly country-made, and it is expected that the accused will face heavy fines and other legal consequences for their involvement in the smuggling operation.
The five accused currently under detention are believed to be residents of Rampur, Uttar Pradesh. Investigators have revealed that the cigarettes were being smuggled for illegal sale in the black market. After reaching Bhubaneswar, the cigarettes were intended to be transported to Kolkata, where they would be sold in the black market for a higher price.
