Bhubaneswar, Dec 9: With the C-section cases on the rise in the private hospitals, Odisha Health Minister Dr Mukesh Mahaling has urged people to go for institutional deliveries in the government health facilities.

Underscoring the status of sophisticated labour rooms and well-to-do maternal care units in the government hospitals even in the district-level hospitals, the Minister urged the expectant mothers to prefer government hospitals over other health facilities. However, he emphasized on normal deliveries also for safety and wellbeing of the mothers and their babies, in case no exigency in the health condition of the patient.

Presenting database on the normal and C-section deliveries during the Assembly session on Monday,the Minister said that a total of 30,08,383 deliveries were recorded in Odisha over the past five years.Of this,Government hospitals accounted for the majority of these cases, registering more than 23,69,000 deliveries.

On the other hand, the proportion of normal births indicated that government hospitals recorded 19,59,918 normal deliveries, significantly higher than the figures recorded in private healthcare institutions. While only 1,48,242 normal deliveries were reported, the number of caesarean deliveries stood at an alarming 4,90,505, more than triple the normal births.Meanwhile, 4,09,718 caesarean deliveries took place in government hospitals during the timeline.
