Ahmadabad, February 28: Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, announced that memory chips will be produced at Micron’s Semiconductor Assembly, Test, and Packaging (ATMP) facility in Sanand, Gujarat. Vaishnaw emphasized that the semiconductor industry is foundational, as memory chips are essential for everything from cameras to mobile phones.

He highlighted India's growing role in the global semiconductor market, with local companies designing cutting-edge chips like the 2 NM chip.

In his address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated the inauguration of the Micron facility, marking a key milestone in India's tech leadership. He emphasized that the commercial production at this facility will strengthen India's position in the global semiconductor value chain. Modi further stated that the semiconductor industry is pivotal to the AI revolution, likening microchips to the oil of the 21st century. He also noted the growing collaboration between India and the USA, particularly in securing global supply chains for AI and semiconductor technologies.

The Sanand facility, which began construction in 2023 under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), will be one of the world’s largest cleanrooms. With a Rs 22,500 crore investment, it will serve global markets, producing DRAM and NAND memory chips to meet the increasing demand driven by AI and high-performance computing. The plant’s establishment underscores India’s commitment to becoming a major player in the global semiconductor industry.
