Kathmandu, August 26: Around 105 Indians are among 384 people reported missing after a flash flood swept through the Bhote Koshi River in Nepal's Rasuwa district on Wednesday, according to preliminary data released by the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB).

The NTB said the figures were based on agency-wise information received from tourism and travel companies and were still being verified. Of the 384 people reported missing, 291 are foreign nationals and 93 are Nepali citizens.

The preliminary list also includes 37 non-resident Indians (NRIs) reported missing from the Himalayan Glacier area.

The flash flood occurred in the Bhote Koshi River at around 8:30 am, prompting the Nepal Tourism Board, Tourist Police and other tourism stakeholders to begin efforts to establish the whereabouts and safety of tourists and travellers who were in or passing through the affected areas.

"Following the sudden flash flood... [authorities] are working to verify the whereabouts and safety status of tourists and travellers," the NTB said in an update on X.

The tourism body said the information was being cross-checked in coordination with travel agencies, guides, local authorities and security agencies.

According to The Kathmandu Post, at least seven people have been confirmed dead following the massive flash flood, which caused widespread destruction in Rasuwa district. Rescue operations were continuing, with at least 25 people rescued by Wednesday afternoon.

Nepal's security forces, including the Nepal Police, Armed Police Force and Nepali Army, have been deployed extensively for search-and-rescue operations. Fourteen helicopters were being used in the rescue effort. Nine Armed Police Force personnel stationed at Timure, near the Nepal-China border, were also reported missing.

The Nepal Tourism Board has urged people seeking emergency assistance to contact the toll-free number 1234 or hotline 1144. The Tourist Police can be reached at 9851289445. Tourists have also been advised to contact the nearest police or security authority, local administration, travel agency, guide or tour operator.

"Tourists are urged to remain calm, stay informed and follow official safety instructions," the NTB said.

The Indian Embassy in Nepal has also issued emergency contact numbers for Indian nationals affected by the flash floods.

"For assistance and information related to Indian nationals that have been affected by the flash floods in Nepal today, the following emergency numbers may be contacted," the embassy said, providing +977 985 131 6807and +977 970 910 7500. (ANI)
