Bhubaneswar, May 19: Tension gripped the Vani Vihar campus on Monday night after four students were allegedly assaulted by a group of outsiders. The incident sparked massive outrage among hostel students, who staged a protest at the university’s main gate demanding immediate arrest of the accused.
According to sources, over eight outsiders allegedly entered the campus and were consuming alcohol near the New Park area while creating nuisance. When some students passed through the spot, the outsiders reportedly stopped and threatened them, leading to a heated exchange. The situation soon turned violent as the intoxicated outsiders allegedly attacked the students, leaving four injured.
After escaping from the spot, the injured students informed fellow hostel inmates about the incident. As news of the assault spread, hundreds of students gathered and launched a protest against the repeated entry of outsiders into the campus.
On receiving information, police personnel from Sahid Nagar police station along with senior officials reached the spot and attempted to pacify the agitating students. However, the protesters continued their dharna till late night, demanding immediate arrest of those involved in the attack.
In view of the tension, two platoons of police force were deployed on the campus. Reports said no arrests had been made till late Monday night. Meanwhile, the injured students alleged that the attackers were linked to a particular political party.
