Bhubaneswar, Jan 27: The Odisha State Road Transport Corporation (OSRTC) will buy 122 premium luxury Volvo buses under the Shree Jagannath Express service to facilitate transportation of people from all districts of Odisha to pilgrim town Puri.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had launched the Shree Jagannath Express service on January 18 with an aim to ensure seamless Shree Jagannath Darshan in the 12th-century shrine.

The buses will operate under the Location Accessible Multi-modal Initiative (LAccMI) Scheme, a flagship programme initiated by the state government to provide rural connectivity through OSRTC.

The state Cabinet had passed the project in last October. A total of Rs 183 crore will be spent under the project.

The price of new premium luxury Volvo bus has been finalised at around Rs 1.5 crore per one bus, said an OSRTC official.

OSRTC MD Diptesh Kumar Pattnayak said the premium luxury coaches will help in creating a modern, efficient, and sustainable public transportation network in the state.
