Hyderabad, February 2: A man from Maharashtra, who had aspirations of contesting local body elections, allegedly killed his six-year-old daughter by throwing her into a canal in Telangana in a desperate bid to meet the eligibility criteria for the upcoming panchayat polls, police reported on February 2.

In Maharashtra, candidates with more than two children are disqualified from running for local office. The 28-year-old man, a resident of Kerur village in the Mukhed taluka of Nanded district—located near the Telangana border—took his daughter to Nizamabad district on January 29. There, he allegedly killed her by throwing her into a canal. The girl's body was later discovered by local residents, who alerted the police.

Upon receiving the information, the police launched an investigation, registering a case and forming three teams to probe the incident. The victim's identity was confirmed after her photograph was circulated by the authorities, and some residents from Mukhed recognized her. Police later visited the village, verifying that the deceased child was indeed from Kerur.

The investigation is ongoing.
