United States authorities officially confirm Lawrence Bishnoi extradition plans

US Justice Department officials now plan to request the extradition of jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi. This development follows a sprawling federal indictment linking his transnational network to the fatal shooting of Canadian separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.Bishnoi currently remains locked inside a high-security prison facility located in Gujarat.

Under a coordinated global crackdown named Operation Hardball, American authorities charged 37 individuals connected to three distinct Indian crime syndicates. Ciaran McEvoy, a public affairs officer for the US Attorney’s Office in California, clarified that federal prosecutors fully intend to bring Bishnoi to American soil soon. He cautioned that such international legal transfers often take multiple years to successfully complete.

Legal Hurdles Present Challenges

Extraditing suspects between New Delhi and Washington relies heavily on their bilateral 1997 treaty and India’s Extradition Act 1962. Geopolitically, transferring undertrial prisoners across borders creates severe diplomatic complexities because domestic judicial systems typically mandate that suspects face local justice first. Bishnoi currently faces dozens of serious criminal prosecutions across multiple Indian states for extortion and organized violence. Indian authorities can legally argue that he must complete his domestic trials and serve potential sentences before any foreign transfer occurs.

Global Network under Scrutiny

Beyond Bishnoi, the recent federal indictment directly targets his core associate Goldy Brar. The FBI placed a $50,000 financial reward for information leading to Brar’s capture.Prosecutors also named Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, who sits in an Assam prison, and Canada-based operative Ravinder Singh Dhanda.American officials plan to prosecute Dhanda gang members in a Los Angeles federal court by late August, though judges will likely reschedule those initial trial dates.

US diplomats will transmit a formal request to India's Ministry of External Affairs. Indian intelligence agencies and the Ministry of Home Affairs will carefully scrutinize the paperwork. They must ensure strict compliance with bilateral treaties beforehand.
